So its pretty unlikely, huh?

Not necessarily going blind but diving in extremely low viz and its very dark. Literally not able to see gauges. So much stuff in the water lights don't help. Is there not some level of situational awareness that a diver can develope that allows them to ascend or stop without all manner of extra equipment?

How about following the line you laid going in?

But then there isn't always a line to follow:

Shane and I had this happen last month on a wall dive with scooters... at 100' we were hit by a small UW mud/sand/debris slide from above that totally obscured our vision.

By following our ears (pressure) were we able to orient ourselves and get out of it and proceed on down to the planned 165'.

That ear following thing is the concept I'm getting at Uncle Pug. Would you consider expanding on it?

Learn to lay line...
Use line in low viz...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Listen to your ears...
Practice in shallow water...
Dive with a buddy...
Check each other in turn...
I carry a spare mask in my thigh pocket on every dive. I am lucky I had it this weekend too, after some lowlife scumbucket at Ginnie Springs stole my mask out of the back of the truck! :upset: I was about to enter Devil's Eye, when my HID burned out. I took off all of my gear in the water. I headed up to the truck to change my battery, and left my mask in the bed of the truck. I came back to get it, and it was gone. Luckily, I still had my spare mask and was able to make the dive. Of course, if I would have the mask break on the dive, I would have had to rely on my buddy to get me out of the cave, but since we were only burning off the rest of our air from our previous dive, the dive was short.
How can you carry a spare mask on EVERY dive when you didn't on your last dive?
