Before you go crab grabbin, you'll need a license, and a means of measuring the claw to be sure it is legal size(2 3/4 inches) BEFORE you remove it. I beleive there was a link posted last week with all the legal info.

Ah, yes. Thanks Mike for posting this info. A license and grabbing legal size claws is a necessity for crabbing and lobstering, for that matter.

I'll be there. From the research I have done. I believe we just need a recreational saltwater fishing license and we can have one gallon of claws per person. I have one of those plastic things to measure lobster but do they make those for stone crab claws? I guess I will check out the local shops and see.

Look and see if your plastic measurer is double sided for both lobsters and crabs. The Crab Regulation is a little smaller. The guage I have has one side for each. If yours doesn't, you can still use the lobster gauge. See you Sunday morning.:crafty:

Just to add to this... If it's anything like at the Skyway, do make *sure* you're legal. Those guys take their job *real* serious and seem to enjoy messing up your day....

Recreational Stone Crabbing Information

As far as taking the claw, it's actually the whole arm you take. The joint connecting the arm to the shell is designed to snap easily so that the crab can escape a predator. Twist the arm under the shell and it will pop off. If you twist the arm away from the shell, you can fracture the shell and kill the crab. Although it's legal to take both claws, the crab really needs one for feeding and defense.

Happy crabbing!

Good luck tomorrow. Went diving at Spanish Rocks today and had a good sessions practicing low-viz diving with my wife. Viz was about 3-5' with a bit of a surge. Hopefully the winds will subside and help with your dive tomorrow. Today was certainly not an optimal day to dive there, but we still had fun.
