I just got the reg back from service and it honks like crazy. Is this normal? Acceptable? I have only had it wet once or twice and only breathed on it wet one time. So, I do not remember it being loud. Any comments?

does it make noise on the inhale or the exhale? It may be you are breathing to softly and then sometimes they do make noise...I also assume it is not the MK 16 making noise but the second stage....

It's a common problem in piston first stages where the piston stem o-ring is not adequately lubricated.

But following the same logic, the problem is most likely resonance that is occuring due to a vibration in the seat carrier due to the o-ring sealing the stem on the seat carrier not adequately lubricated causing the carrier to vibrate during inhalation.

I'd send it back to whoever serviced it.

If I follow your logic... Even though it is a diaphragm reg it can still have some of the resonance problems of a piston reg if things that are supposed to move arent lubricated enough to move freely.

I return trip to the shop does seem in order.

Are you sure it is in the first stage?

Sometimes second stages make noises like that when you breath them when they are dry.

I had a Mk10 that whistled. I'm not musically inclined, so some may refer to the sound as honking. I dove with it for months before I had it serviced. Turned out there were good sized cracks in the first stage under the low pressure port caps. My LDS and tech had never seen anything like it. Hopefully that isn't your problem.

I've got the Mk16/S550 and the only time it's made any kind of "honking" noise is when I breathed it "dry". That noise was definetely coming from the second stage. I also have a Mares reg that makes the same dry "honk" noise. If in doubt, I'd get it checked out.

WELL, After the return trip to the shop.... Still not wet, no noise at all. Just like something mechanical it always works when you take it to the shop.

I guess a should shut up and dive!

which I did today. 127 ft one piece 3/2 with hooded vest......not near enough neoprene. I called it a tune up for the post dry suit gulf spearing season. It was actually castration by ice water.

Dive Safe everyone
