As the title states, I'm interested in learning about local community/group for CCR divers. I'm very interested in converting, but need to find buddies, information, etc. I mostly dive out of Pompano.

I'm not even sure where to start. I'd like to know what units others dive in the area. I see CCR's on my local dives boats once in a while, but it's rare, since a 45-minute to an hour run-time per dive isn't worth it for a CCR diver.

My interest is deep wreck penetrations. I realize I'll be stuck at MOD1 for a while, re-exploring everything at <130ft, but willing to put in the hours to get to the 200+ ft wrecks. I'm also interested in diving very often... possibly on a weekly basis, year around.

So that's sort of the catch-22. I want to meet people that do the type of diving I want to do, on the other hand I don't currently do them (nor have a rebreather) and so I'm not meeting those people. Looking for assistance in where to start.

Thank you!

No responses in over a month... that's a shame.

I also contacted Mark Derrick @ DGX to see if they have demo days or at least the ability to even physically see the CCR's they sell and that lead nowhere. I have no idea which unit to train on and I'm not looking to build a collection just yet, especially as certs aren't transferrable.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Boriss,

I see quite a few rebreather divers on the South Florida Diving Headquarters charters going out of Pompano. Usually on the deeper 140 foot + wrecks.. There's a good proportion of rebreather divers on the tech trips they run.

Andrei,

I dive almost exclusively with SFDH, haven't seen much, unfortunately, mostly just people trying to rack up hours. Serious tech trips are private charters.

SFDH doesn't run too many 140+ trips. Just checked, there are two trips out to the Hydro (175ft) next month... and then nothing for months. Will have to make a trip out there and see what kind of equipment they have. Thanks for the tip.

Are you using CCR or doubles? You're local, wondering if you have similar interests?

Thanks for the response... it was starting to feel lonely

I’d reach out to Jimmy Gadomski at SFDHQ. He’s one of their captains and more active CCR divers in the area.

You can check with Stuart Scuba in Stuart, I know a couple of rebreather instructors that work out of there. I also believe that Pura Vida in West palm Beach/Singer Island does rebreathers.

Another CCR diver here is always welcome. I'm on a Revo, certified to 70m. Unfortunately with Scubatyme getting sold to SFDH the tech charters are fewer. Some of my friends are fond of key divers but I haven't tried them yet. I second getting in touch with Jimmy. He often posts tech dives on FB.

I did a dive with Stuart to the Andes wreck @185 feet. I was the only one on a RB diving 16/37 and saw the largest (no I wasn't narc'd) Goliath Grouper I've ever seen. The shallower wrecks were fun but not as challenging (other than the current, I'm an old guy). I remember around 120 or so i picked up a remora that I didn't shake till 30 feet :rofl3: at least it beat staring off into nothing.

Yeah I'm not fond of the remoras at all 😂

I almost forgot that there's a 'south Florida tech divers' group on Facebook. If you're not already a member, send me a DM and I'll get you an invite

It turns out I can't add anyone I'm not familiar with and has Tech qualifications. Why don't we create our own group in the meantime? I used to have one but everyone lost interest!
