The front page photo of the Gainesville Times from a couple days ago showed the top row of exposed concrete bleachers from the racetrack (old lanier speedway)? The same photo was on the Times website, but it didn't identify it as such. For anyone interested, the racetrack is located off from Laurel Park, in the northern section of Lake Lanier, off from Hwy 129 N. Although I don't have any plans to dive it, I would be GREATLY interested in what's underneath those nasty brown waves...

check out gainesvilletimes.com and the photo is still on the site. also, there is a local beach (to me) where my map identifies several structures, but so far only foundations have surfaced. there is an island off shore that is supposedly the site of the old cemetary, and a semi-creepy local dude on the beach said there used to be a trading post on the island too. now what would I have to do to tempt someone up to the north end of the lake who might be interested in diving around the island to see if there are any remaining underwater structures? It's not too far from the race track site either...Realistically, all I can really provide are directions, maybe lunch, cheering from shore, I am not personally equipped to do any diving right now. Let me know if anyone interested. I'd like to see some Looney Birds in action!

All of the houses and buildings were either moved or dismantled for salvage lumber before the lake was backed up.

All you'll find are foundations.

If there were any little shacks or small buildings left standing, they'd all be collapsed by now.

I'm very curious about diving other spots in Lake Lanier. West Bank Park seems to be the most popular area to dive. After diving at West Bank Park a dozen times it's pretty much the same thing, I guess I just like exploring. I cannot speak for the Looney Birds, they used to dive regularly at West Bank Park. Maybe it's the lower water levels that are keeping the Loonies away. I am going out of town the end of next week. When I return I am going to check out Laurel Park.

Sounds good to me! The only reason I haven't been trying new spots is because I am looking for my camera.

I for one am definately interested in trying some new spots, the exploration aspect interests me even if we never find anything other than mud bottoms. Guppy I would really like to check out that map and pull some lat/longs off it. Are you around this weekend? Maybe we could meet up somewhere and I could take a look or even xerox it somewhere. pm me.

I can't find the picture. can you provide a link?

Flightlead,

If you go to the Bass Pro store or most any bait and tackle shop, you can find a fisherman's map of Lake Lanier.

It shows where all the houses were, gives their Lat/Long locations, depths, and what type of structure it is. The map also shows the old road beds, etc.
