My wife bought an Internet tutorial and just spent the last few hours learning how to make a music video she could have cared less about. Probably going back.

If you use Vegas how did you learn to use it? She is very comfortable with Photoshop after spending many many hours with Online courses.

I use it and just started out trying stuff and using the help function. I like the program and it is very powerful when you learn all the things it does and how to do it. Don't give up on it. If you take stills and video underwater, nothing else really works to combine both on a DVD as well as vegas but get the suite, so you can make the DVD when you are through.

Hi,
all serious video editing programmes have a learning curve. I don't think Vegas is particularly steep in that regard, and I personally find it far easier than Photoshop! I found the VASST DVD training course to be money well spent. You don't say which version of Vegas you've got, but you might want to have a look at this:
Absolute Training for Vegas + DVD Beginner Bundle
$99 might sound like a lot, but it all depends on how valuable your wife's time is. Believe me, the guy who presents the video (Douglas Spotted Eagle) is a natural born teacher, and the DVD saved me a lot of pain. I'd suggest, before buying, that you e-mail them to make sure you get the right training DVD.
Good luck - it's worth persevering!

Vegas Movie Studio is a more vbasic version and it is very powerful, better than Adobe Premiere (which I used for years on SD footage) IMHO. However any good, highly capable video editing program like these will require a steep learning curve to become truly proficient. Editing video (other than very basic) requires an investment in time as well as $$$ (for the software and gear).

You can also learn a lot from just going to youtube and doing a search on the software you have. There are all kinds of "how to" clips that take you step by step.

Thanks for the help!

No worries on the hardware. She got juiced up Mac Pro last year with their new big LCD. One a side note I'm sure Apple would have wished she bought it this quarter. Anyone taking a Apple haircut this morning?

I've always learned software via a combination of trial-and-error, supported by the plethora of helpful instructionals on Youtube. This has been my approach for the last 12 months using Sony Vegas. I've done about 16 videos now (you can see them on my Youtube and Vimeo channels)... both with footage from my own dives, or on behalf of others.

Practice makes perfect - and I am far more motivated to learn whilst producing my own results, rather than just 'go through the motions' with learning exercises.

So Devon, can you give us a Condensed summary of tips?
