So my buddy and I were diving in a wreck. (Tracy). The captain of our boat mentioned something about worms being attached to the ceiling of the wreck, and bubbles could knock them off.

After we surfaced, my buddy mentioned that during the penetration, he felt a slight stinging behind his right ear. Feeling were the stinging was coming from, he felt a small firm lump behind his ear, he then ripped it off and threw it, increasing the amount of pain he felt. He was unable to see what it looked liked.

My question is, does anyone know what this could be? Could this be the worm our captain talked about?:dontknow:The captain never mentioned anything about it stinging.

I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong forum

Thanks!

Ah, the lovely and talented bristle or fire worm... lovely creature... looks like this:

Usually not that pretty... all of those little fibers can do a number on you.

They like to sleep on the ceiling and air will easily dislodge them...not fun.. and the sting (ok, the broken off filaments) usually do not heal very quickly....

Down the back of the neck is one of the worst places to get them.

Treatment?

Penetrating a wreck with 49 dives?

Didnt you know that Bristle Worms are the SCUBA police? They issued a warning. ;)

I'm not familiar with that wreck, but if the captain issued warnings about dislodging stuff from the ceiling, it would seem that he was aware there would be penetration?

yes.Penetrating a wreck. It was for my Wreck certification class.

And thankyou very much Puffer Fish for the quick reply!

Yes, he was well aware. He even congratulated us even once we finished our dives.
