Here is a link to some pics showing cleanup. They were taken by Adrian from Especias.

As always, people see the glass half empty while others see it as half full.
Here are some other observations from witnesses.

Hola Amigos,

Sorry I didn't answer any emails yesterday, but I was worn out. Too much cleaning and work to do.

Cozumel update III

I got good news and bad ones.
Many people asking about Allegro. They were going to open this coming Nov.1st., but unfortunately, they will open in about 3 months. Occidental Grand, took a bunch of tourist on a plane yesterday and today supposed to send another 60 or so. They expect to open again in about 1 month.
Had the chance to go on the boat in a test run and checked out Puerta Maya pier, which is completely in ruins. The "good" part is that belongs to Carnival and I am sure they have all the resources needed to built another one. International pier has some damage, but still up. Presidente hotel, lost all the sand in their artificial beach and got pretty damaged. Pier lost.. Fiesta Americana lost their pier as well and got damaged too.
Most of the hotels won't be ready until 3 more months.

I had a chance to ride on the motorcycle going to the south of the island and found the old road destroyed in some parts. Especially those parts that are very close to the ocean.

On the other side of the island, by Punta Sur the road got even worse, after Emily and now Wilma. Everything closed.

Ok, enough of the bad news. The good ones: Royal Caribbean and Carnival are sending a cruise ship each one with volunteers to help on the island, supplies, food, etc.
Today, about 5 PM we got a cruise ship with about 500 people ready to help and more supplies. It was far away and couldn't see the line.
Helicopters were very busy going to a sports field on the 65 AV. to drop supplies. Going back and forth all morning. You can see them with big nets hanging.
According with the Major, the next cruise ships will be arriving here with tourist in only 3 weeks! So, we need to hurry up cleaning and fixing the town to get them here, he said.

Some sections have already power! Can you believe that? It is amazing how far they are moving. It is expected to have power by this Saturday in the section I live. Some people have got back their phone lines little by little.
School restarts officially next Nov. 14th
Chedraui, the supermarket will open regularly sometime this week.
There were some divers going out today. Port opened, ocean was very nice and sunny.

One of my divers wrote an email asking me about the situation, since he saw on the news this has been a terrible thing that happened to us. Well, that is right, don't know what exactly the news said about us, but for experience they always try to sell the information and this needs to be as dramatic as possible, or they make takes from 2 or 3 days ago, to show everything as bad as possible.
The situation is not good at all, who likes to have his home destroyed? But it happened and there is nothing else to do that work hard and bring Cozumel back to life. It won't be miracles, but little by little we will be back or even better that it was before. That is the spirit we have now!!

Best regards!

Heh, just posted this info as well... we must have been doing it at the same time!

Hmmm, maybe we do need the moderators to come through and clean this up... NOT! :07:

Wow I am amazed at how much a difference a few days makes!!!! Looks like the island is well on its way to recovery! Heck, it looks like they (Mexican Gov't and people) are better off than the people in Florida!!!!!

This is excellent news. Within a month's time dive ops and hotels should be up and running. I know it will "probably" take 3-6 months for a full recovery but once tourist dollars get back into Coz that should really speed up the efforts.

I was there, the people of Cozumel started clean up Sunday afternoon when they could get out and didn't wait for the government. The news media here in the US is liberal/left and need stories about how the government isn't doing enough so they find the whiners. From what I saw, they'd have a hard time finding anyone to talk to in Coz.

Keep that out of here, please. There is no way that anyone is going to change anyone else's mind about that sort of thing, and this is not the place to try.

Once again, I agree with Gordon.

I found it to be informative, and true!
