I think the logic is (and I'm not saying I agree) if you can free-dive down to 30 feet, thats 30' up and 30' down which equals 60'. So if you are on scuba at 60' feet and run out of air, you know you can easily make a free ascent.
but then folks like freediver who have been to 185' could make a free ascent from 270'? there would have to be a limit to the assumption of doubling your freediving depths for solo diving I would think.. but I sure don't know much about scuba ya know...

Hey freediver..now that's impressive... did you fin down/up? Why not do some competitions? Those numbers would get you points. Who is the pro that lives in texas.. is it Tanya? Is freediving getting a big following down there and are you seeing your clinics getting more popular? Any gain on the scuba?

Yes, I used the typical 3 foot long blade fins. I considered competition at one point but unfortunately a brain tumor (another thread altogether) has sidelined me for a year. i did train with Tanya Streeter (phenomenal!!) Freediving has gained in popularity and my clinics have been doing quite well. As far as scuba, I can get 2 hours from a 63 cuft cylinder at constant depth of about 35 feet. My one proud fact, I swam underwater distance of 125 yards with fins and it actually tied the American record! Only mine was unofficial in front of a few friends.

I'm impressed! Blows my PBs right out of the water!

But then again, I'm getting in way more scuba dives than freedives lately too...

doing searches here I come across the word freediving on occassion... "I was freediving....", "...doing some freediving...", "...freediving down to ....", ".. spearfishing and freediving...." Well here's my question.. Who on the forum is serious into this freediving and are you pushing the numbers? Trying for deeper and deeper depths? Longer and Longer breath holds? Getting away from scuba more and more to just go freediving? And tell me this.. what's freediving to you? 6', 12', 20', 25'? (o.k. 2m, 3m, 6m, 7m) or is it 100' or 150' or 200'. Or somewhere inbetween? A few of us want to know... Don't freedivers just get under your (scuba divers) skin sometimes? Are you seeing more and more freedivers out there while scubadiving than in the not so distant past?

I am both a SCUBA diver and free diver....

I free dive for abalone in waters usually no more than 20', although I have taken abalone at greater depths. When I go to warmer climates I freedive on reefs comfortably to depths of 40' with probably 30 secs of bottom time. I am able to surface comfortably and not be gasping for air. I feel I could push myself to go further and intend to in the future. I have great respect for anyone who can do an unassisted freedive to depths beyond my personal best...especially for dives greater than 150'. Freediving is very relaxing and comfortable, although sometime you get to places where you'd lilke to breathe from a tank so you can swim with the fish longer, examine an octopus or coral head longer, etc.etc.

Don't freedivers just get under your (scuba divers) skin sometimes?

what's the beef with freedivers? Isn't the ocean big enough for all of us?

BTW - I would get a serious kick out seeing someone free dive below me on any SCUBA dive below 60'....that would be pretty cool ;)

I have been freediving for a while now. Loved it. Also just got SCUBA certified with my daughter, 10yrs old. She is doing great too. She can freedive to 25ft and then backup.
Freedive don't have all of the worry of BC,reg, computer,DCS,Nitro nark...

But then it also has the SWB (Shallow Water Blackout), that's when you really push your limit to the max which I don't intend to do.

I enjoyed the freedom of freediving but also enjoy the time spend down in water using SCUBA. Both have plus and minus. I enjoy both :)

So that's it??!! We only have a handful of freedivers here.. only a few that are hitting any kinda depths? (ok, ok, it is a scuba site) I thought there would be more of us. I'd sure like to see the sport grow... you can't beat it for cost (especially for not having to pay for any kinda cert. cards!! let alone equipment costs), efficiency, time in the water, and sense of accomplishment when moving the pesonal bests deeper and deeper and longer and longer. I know the freediving sites are filled with freedivers, of course.. but I really thought more scuba divers here at scubaboard would be into it.

I do it a little. Mostly I do short down-and-ups to look at something or grab a piece of gear someone dropped off the boat. I'd say the deepest I've been is about 50-60 feet.

hey holdingmybreath, wonder if there would be interest in a freediving forum? I do agree, it's hard to beat the cost of freediving. any other freedivers around?

I don't do much of it anymore, but I was into freediving Florida Springs a while back. My personal best was 60 feet, but keep in mind that was at a spring with a very strong upflow. It seems as though scuba has pretty much taken over my life, though.
