Ok about not needing a mask, a bit of topic but anyways...

There´s a "tribe" in south east asia somewhere (saw on tv, don´t remember) that has an adaption that improves their eyesight uw...they do this by constricting their pupils to almost pinhead size...they learn how to do this as kids and quickly learn to see (almost) as good as people with masks uw.

Turns out it´s not genetic, they did a study on swedish kids who they had "learn" the same thing and in 6 months they were just as good as the "asians". Even adults can learn to do this (takes longer) all you´re supposed to do is to practise focusing on things uw.

Sounds interesting? Too much hard work?
I wouldn´t reccomend it but I guess you could achieve the same effect with a few known chemical substances, don´t know if I´d reccomend going diving afterwards though ;-)

The future is now! :-)

I think the HUD mask will certainly be worth my time and money, and will happily invest money into it when it makes it to the open market. The neptune II mask also has a variation curently available, however its much more low tech, and relys on LED's to note vital info.

The medical field currently has an oxygen sensor that they can clamp or even tape to the fingertip of an individual. I'd like to see something similar for nitrogen that is on the back of a wrist computer, and gives you an actual oxygen/ nitrogen loading readout.

I'd love to see a wetsuit with a built in heating fiber in it, that warms the user. I'd love to see underwater electronic navigation, maybe not GPS but something like that would be fantastic. I'd love to see wetsubs get more affordable, and God knows I'd love to see Dry subs more affordable.

And I'd love to see rebreathers at a more manageable size, and more commonly used (then I'd have en excuse to take it up).

But I also fear that all of the agencies are complicit in making it more difficult to dive. As was stated before, what was once jsut an OW dive is now an advanced or even nitrox dive, and the certs are required by dive operators. As was pointed out in another thread, legislation and regualtion will soon make it difficult to dive on public lands, and in some palces, already has infringed on our ability to do this. And I too fear the day when we will be required to obtain and retain yet another card, a state diving license. But the thing that disturbs me is the lack of professional accreditation that instructors are required to go through. In most professions, it's a requirement that you pass a written, that you pass a verbal, that you pass a board exam or some sort, that you show profficiency, and that there is a governing body that certifies this process and REGULATES it's instructors. As the system stands currently, we have no recourse against a bad instructor UNTIL they kill somebody. Yet we've seen instructors that have had people die on them on deep dives, or wreck dives while under an instructors tuteledge, and yet these instructors retain their licensing, even if they were at fault. We have to be able to police ourselves, and so far, we are falling down on the job, and so are the various agencies that hold us to our standards.

A problem that I have with the various agencies, is that they gain financially from just about every decision they make. They want a new type of cert card? Somebody will pay for it, because diver ops/ centers wont allow you to go 15 feet beyond your OW limit without it. Cha Ching. A new instructor? Cha ching, who cares that he can't expalin boyles law, or that he takes students on 'trust me' dives. New legislation is in the works that will require that in order to dive on public lands or public waters, we show an ultra advanced dive card, with an incremental licensing up to 120 feet, and that we also carry the public waters divers card? Is that lobbying against such requirements coming from the various agencies I hear? Nope, they'd support it, because look at how many new certs they'd be required to write lesson plans on and certify people on. So far the various agencies haven't done anything for me, save put the lessons I need into a format that is easy to read, rather than research on my own, and they've given me a handy peice of plastic to use at dive charters and get my gas. Which I wouldnt have to do unless someone had required it to begin with. And since some brainiac went beyond his training and abilities, and offs himself at depth and his estate refuses to hold him accountable for his own actions/stupidity we have to put up with such standards. But the licensing processes these agencies are coming up with only compound things such as these, and in the future will only compound the act of diving itself. It's just too bad the agencies are hamstringing me at every other turn.

Don - Gobsmacked about the Freedom of speech thing????

I obviously was't listening in history class.

This comes back to my point about the rapid expansion of the Scuba industry, Its getting safer and safer, more and more people will get interested, all driven by money$£$£$£$£$£$£$, this is a very hard problem to deal with, it has a runaway effect.

My 2 pence worth, This is not good!!!!!!

Back to the original point, What about the new low capacity Mini B self contained system, Is this not a step backwards???????????

I've tested this several times but I think more testing is needed. For anyone interested in the research contact a local supplier and just ask for the B.E.E.R. research project.

Not only does it screw up your eyes but Severe Off Gassing can be generated.

Hummmmm, I just got off work so I think some research is in order.

I need to work on no-mask stuff anyways. This would be an awesome thing to be able to learn to do.....

If you squint underwater, without a mask on, the slit from you eyelids should also help you focus.

And if you lose your mask, you can form a bubble over your eyes by placing both your hands above your eyebrows together like a visor, and see that way, when the bubble forms, at least see good enough to find your mask again and put it on.

Those are really old tricks.

So why not tailor something that will convert excess nitrogen in our blood into something else that will be flushed harmlessly.

The thing they are having a problem with in this field is making a microbe that our rockin' immune systems won't kill quickly. The microbes they have been trying to develop to attack other bad tissues and toxins (i.e. cancer cells) are having the same problem... that and they attack things that we need for the body.

I've tried the squinting thing - still can't read my guages or see more than shapes, though. Haven't tried the bubble thing - though I can see that being bit difficult if only one hand is available for airtrapping. The no-mask stuff I need to practice is for training that will involve not getting to put my mask back on.
