Kahaluu Beach Park in Kona is the most popular place to snorkel on the island. It has super clear water, tons of fish, and turtles always hang out there. The water is not very deep - at most 10 ft. Don't go out too far beyond the rocks because there can sometimes be lots of current if there is much wave action.

Go over to the Hawaii O'hana forum on this board. There's a sticky post with diving recommendations.

My suggestion is the Place of Refuge (a.k.a. Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Park) in the Capt.Cook district about 7mi south of Kailua-Kona town. Most everyone jumps in from a lava shelf to the side of a boat channel. Clear water, mostly finger coral, gets deep fairly quickly; I don't recall any facilities so bring your own rinse water and whatnot; be careful where you park to not p.o. the residents. For a number of years, a pod of dolphins would regularly come in very close at about lunchtime. Also look for longnose butterfly's with a hole in their bodies; usually about big enough to push a pencil through. It appears to be a genetic defect rather than a wound because it appears in varying sizes among different individuals. A picture of one is here.

+ 1 for Kahaluu Beach Park. It is a great place for snorkeling and is also known as snorkel beach. The water is clean, clear, with lots of fish and over 25 acres of coral reef. Have a great trip!

+1 here as well, I had a great time snorkeling here. I saw a ton of fish, turtles and other life, I would get there early though as the beach fills up quite fast as the day goes on and the "beach" is full of people. Plenty of room in the water though, watch out for the urchins though!!!
