Geez, you don't see that sort of behaviour much around these parts.

I've seen a few people do it before and known people who had cars damages that way but never so many in one place but I saw it I swear.

Around here some people burn leaves and even garbage in their yard filling the whole down wind area with smoke for hours at a time. They often do the burning on the down wind side of their property so they only bother other people with their smoke. I wonder how these same people would act if you lit a cig next to them.

The law sure doesn't seem to be consistant with it's concern about me being forced to breath smoke.

The definition of "good manors" doesn't seem any more consistant.

The majority doesn't like smoking so they'll make it as hard as they can for others to smoke...just because they can.

Spending time in the smoke filled house/workplace of a smoker probably is a health hazard but I doubt catching a little wiff outside does anything. It might be a problem for some one with an allergy and though I don't have any data I'll bet that there isn't many with an allergy so severe.

Don, you are not going to find a way to smoke in public without problems. They just don't like it.

This thread reminded me of a guy (Wayne) my dad knew when I was a kid. This guy was a well respected local business man, very upper class if you know the type.

Anyway, we were all at a very fancy restaurant ($100 plus a plate and this was 25 years ago). when a guy from the next table leaned over and asked if we minded if he smoked, to which Wayne replied not if you don't mind if I fart. The place fell silent. It was so funny.

I haven't really seen that level of inconsiderateness around here, but I'm sure it exists. I should probably consider myself fortunate that the problem here isn't nearly as bad as where you are (or at least as evident).

As far as the burning issue is concerned, there's little to no burning of anything that goes on (intentionally). The cancer heads are another issue, though. It's difficult to walk anywhere downtown without someone blowing smoke in your face. As a non-smoker, it really starts to get to you after a while. But I'll stop here before I get on a rant.

I've seen the shopping cart thing sometimes. Don't know what people are thinking - actually I'm pretty sure they're not thinking and/or just lazy.

Our new neighbors once burned a sort of smudge pot to chase away bugs and smoked out a wide area. Apparently it was a common thing to do in their country. Someone called the fire department, who were pretty concerned because it was a drought time and they thought it was a brush fire. It wasn't clear where the smoke was coming from at first and they spent a long time frantically combing the woods looking for the fire. Finally they tracked it down to these people, who after the visit from the fire department have never done that again. I don't know if the fire department had a law to use, or just convinced them it was inappropriate in a US suburb.

As for the shopping trolly response, easilly sorted, have people insert a monatary token, here 1 euro, elsewhere i dont know.....they will return it ! kind of silly response in such a heated debate in my opinion from a smoker, Mike, mod or not, take a stand !(just my opinion....wasted analogy)
And as for the post by UWSojourner......how much time did you waste thinking up that crap, sad....smoke fills, smoke suits....maybe spend some time with your fellow man, smoker or not, and dont be so hung up about him .....accept him.......albeit downwind !!

They tried it down here quite a few years ago. It was a quarter, you put your quarter in the cart and it got unlocked. Then when you returned the cart you got the quarter back from the cart in front of you. They finally quit doing that, I think somebody figured out how to steal the quarters!

Well, there went that thread - from Smoking Protocols to Shopping Carts. :D

Well Don was that a complaint or a comment you made a few pages back saying the thread stayed on target...you didn't think it would last forever would you? :D
