Hey folks! Just a quick question about wings. I recently bought a ss backplate for doubles, so I want to make my transpac a streamlined single tank rig. I use a hp 130 when single, with a 7mm farmer john. usually need 20 to 22 pounds. Whats the smallest wing I can get away with in your opinion? I have asked a number of people I trust, and have had responces ranging from 18# to 45#. I want the smallest wing I can get away with. Thanks so much!

Required wing capacity is mostly a function of the buoyancy of the divers exposure suit, not the cylinder.

Why do divers use BC's? To compensate for the change in buoyancy of the divers suit as they descend and the suit compresses.

The "right" wing for a 130 and a 3mm wetsuit will not be the the "right" wing for a 130 and a 7mm suit or drysuit and thick undies.

If you are currently using a steel 130 (~-2 lbs empty) and 22 of lead and ~2 lbs of regulator you have in effect about 26 lbs of "things that don't float" aka ballast.

Based on that estimate a 30 lbs wing would be a reasonable choice.

Apropos of nothing, I also dive in 7mm one-piece wetsuit and a Dive Rite Transpac (or a Dive Rite Transplate harness with SS hard plate), and I have the Faber M-series 120-cf tank. This tank is even heavier than a typical 130, and my old Dive Rite 30lbs Venture Wing lifts everything just fine in salt water.
