So the compass must have had some significant bumps while in my suitcase, and the dial is no longer freely turning. I have it out of the DSS boot but am clueless about if or how to get it back where it belongs

Has anyone had this trouble?

I had the same. Gave it a good smack and it jumped back in position.

Not recommend and try at your own risk :)

+1 for the smack

The card coming off the pivot happens with mine all the time. A sound thump usually takes care of the issue with no after effects. YMMV
