Silly Question about Lobsters

The other day after I stuck my arm way under a rock in an attempt to grab a pinchy crustacean it occurred to me that this isn't the safest activity in the world. Has there ever been an accident where a diver got stuck trying to grab a lobster?

I never realized the caribbean spiny's could do such a thing until I saw this.

Another person I know got bit in the finger by one not too long ago.. (a spiny).


I've caught doesn't of them and never realized they could bite like that.


Now the Main ones I'm sure their pinchers really hurt as I've been snapped
by blue crabs and they hurt. One of my dive buddys was poking at a blue
crab once and wasn't paying good attention and it snapped onto his finger,
and held on.... I swear you could hear him yell even underwater. he
couldn't get it to let go....

Ok so maybe I've watched "The Deep" too many times I absolutely will NOT swim ANYWHERE near a lobster pot underwater or on the surface. I stay outside of shotgun range of all lobster pots because I'm from Maine and those guys are SCAREY. I hear your RI lobstermen are a little sallyish in that they won't shoot you on the spot, they'll just drop pots on your head or mess with your car. Anyway lets not go there since we already have a lobsterman thread. markfm-I'm a student, foraging for food is totally not beneath me but I thought I'd give up desserts and snacks and booze and coffee to save up for my suit.
Next set of silly lobster questions:
Can I mess up a drysuit reaching into a lobster hole?
Has anything non-fatally bad happened to you while messing around with lobsters?

Reaching into a hole I got a good pinch once. My buddy was laughing as I was cursing through my reg trying to get the thing to let go. Even the 1.5 pounders can hurt. Reaching in risks ripping your suit as well.

I have seen the infamous "Massachusetts Lobzilla". Easily capable of snapping an arm like a twig, and with such creatures out there I will no longer reach into holes for dinner. I'm actually not kidding but I have no photographic proof of it. Fortunately I had a buddy who can vouch for it. Night dive on the stern of the Poling....when I showed him he jumped out of his skin for a minute. On the surface he said it was so big at first he thought I was showing him a human body. That's another thread though.

I'll reach in to a hole if I can see the claws and slam my hand down on both claws at once to keep from getting bit. You can one hand over two fairly big lobster claws sometimes. If you get them like that it's easier to pull them out of the hole ( with a little patience,) without ripping off claws because you have them by both claws at once. But I wouldn't reach into a hole without being able to see the claws I'm going after....NO WAY! Ouch!!!!!!!
On one dive this last summer my dive buddy had a lobster get both of his index fingers with each claw! He told me he was yelling through his reg, but I was laughing so hard that I couldn't hear him! Sorry Weiben...but it was funny at the time!
