The other day after I stuck my arm way under a rock in an attempt to grab a pinchy crustacean it occurred to me that this isn't the safest activity in the world. Has there ever been an accident where a diver got stuck trying to grab a lobster?

I don't know about that,, But there have been cases in the south where fisherman have drown grappling for catfish under rocks. So I can only imagine the same could happen to a diver. Assuming of course, that a diver would do such a thing.

I don't know if it's actually happened but I wouldn't be surprised.
Some other things I may be more worried about are:

1. Underwater obstacles that create entanglement hazards-Diver I knew was killed while lobstering-tank valve caught on lobster pot line- I know you like to go lobstering so I'll post the thread for your benefit: http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=117880&highlight=sandwich Make sure to read Mass-Diver's comments-great advice for New England divers.

2.Irate lobsterman who believe you're raiding their traps or ruining their life in general-I've been shot at, run over and traps dropped on my head

Getting back to your original question, I've stuck my arm in many a lobster hole and have been able to pull it out every time-hopefully with a lobster in tow

He didn't get stuck but my dentist almost had to find another profession after a moray got ahold of his uppper arm when he stuck his arm in a hole going after a lobster. For me the lobster looper works just fine.

OUCH!

Jeesh, gidds, trying to save up for the drysuit by foraging for dinner? :D

Ok so maybe I've watched "The Deep" too many times ;) I absolutely will NOT swim ANYWHERE near a lobster pot underwater or on the surface. I stay outside of shotgun range of all lobster pots because I'm from Maine and those guys are SCAREY. I hear your RI lobstermen are a little sallyish in that they won't shoot you on the spot, they'll just drop pots on your head or mess with your car. Anyway lets not go there since we already have a lobsterman thread. markfm-I'm a student, foraging for food is totally not beneath me;) but I thought I'd give up desserts and snacks and booze and coffee to save up for my suit.
Next set of silly lobster questions:
Can I mess up a drysuit reaching into a lobster hole?
Has anything non-fatally bad happened to you while messing around with lobsters?

Ummm..well I have missed a few!

Obviously you haven't seen the latest installment of the "Saw" movies..."Saw 3 - THE DIVE". An unsuspecting diver sticks her arm in a lobster hole and gets stuck. An unknown diver appears with a dive slate and a dive knife...the rest is up to your imagination.
;)
