I think in the military, you already have disability insurance. It means a service connected disability.

All you have to do is make sure you have a good copy of your medical record. When you are disabled, even years after discharge, you can file a service connected disability at that time.

Better yet, have it worked up and documented before you get discharged. You might get 10 to 100% disability from the service... Tax free... Medical coverage... and even money for schooling later.

Get it documented, get a copy of your medical record for yourself (the military has a wonderful black hole that sucks up medical record, very rapidly)... Don't count on the service to maintain the record for you.
