I've heard reports of them being seen in numbers in La Jolla Canyon. Will have to get out there for a change of pace. We don't see them often in the dive park (most likely due to the number of divers present), but they are seen in Avalon and Descanso Bays on either side of the Park (where SCUBA diving isn't permitted most of the time).

I saw one about 6 feet long and 2 1/2 to 3 ft wide. It was truly prehistoric looking. Elasmobranchs are soooo my favorite! :07:

Laurel- don't use them big words on me, I'm just a lowly PhD!

I used to see more of these in my early days of diving Catalina. Fewer divers around to disturb them in the Park and elsewhere, not to mention increased fishing pressure and other environmental problems.

So, you are saying you don't understand any words with more than two syllables???

I saw the second biggest torpedo ray at Santa Cruz island on Sunday. It was about 4 feet long and two feet wide. Very cool!

Nice... I'm diving Farnsworth Bank Friday and hope to see several torpedo rays there as well as a lot of other critters I don't see in the more protected and warmer waters of Avalon.

Doing a lot of boat diving these days thanks to Scuba Luv. In fact, I haven't dived Casino Point in about two weeks. Hear the vis was fantastic there the past few days.

I saw two of these at Crescent Bay on Sunday on one dive. One buried in the sand like your picture and a Banded Guitarfish totally exposed. The Banded was about 3.5-4' long and did not swim away as we came up on it. Frank even managed to get several pictures before we moved on.

I saw many of those while snorkeling and diving in La Jolla a few years ago. They're amazing!
