Nowadays bottom timers cost more than some dive computers.

Unless you do a dive that really requires a bottom timer, stick with a computer. Or better yet, get a computer that can also do gauge mode.

Well, I called Suunto who referred me to Aqualung who said the depth sensor could not be repaired as it was out of warranty. All they said was to find a dive shop who could sell me the computer module itself...the nearest one being Athens. Sooo, looks like I'll just be lugging around an expensive SPG for a while till I can finance other options.

That's appalling. Suunto know there's a manufacturing defect and they choose to shelter behind a warranty. Suunto have just descended several tens of percents in my book. Contrast that with Canon! If only we could persuade Canon to go into making dive computers!

Yeah, I'm really disappointed with them. I walked into the Apple store with my iPhone 4 that was having problems. It showed no problems when I was in the store but they just handed me a new one anyway and sent me on my way. All electronics manufacturers should have that kind of service.

When I called and mentioned the depth sensor the receptionist immediately knew what I was talking about. Definite recall needed.

I don't know whether Suunto read these pages - I do know that several manufacturers do - but I should like to know their reaction to this story. I've always regarded Suunto products as well made if not always that well designed (their computers are way too conservative for many divers) but finding that on the rare occasion they have a manufacturing defect, and evidently know about it, they nonetheless choose to push the loss caused by their own incompetence onto the customer. No more Suunto for me I'm afraid, and I won't be recommending it to customers.
