You have been very lucky. if something goes wrong and it comes out that you are DM and failed your duty to act in the capacity as a DM you are in big trouble. Sounds to me that you show your AOW card and dismiss any responsibility. That is negligent.

I'll let that one <negligent> slide since you don't know me.

When you're working as a DM, you accept the responsibility that comes with the job. If you're on a pleasure dive trip and you just happen to be DM qualified you are NOT required or expected to perform in that capacity. In fact on many boats you would be considered "in the way". If you chose to identify yourself as a DM and step forward to assist with DM duties you ARE no longer on a pleasure dive trip.

Just a thought about helping people . . . I've started to have a wonderful time functioning as a mentor. I got SO much from NW Grateful Diver, who mentored me. There's a big need out there for experienced divers to take the people AFTER their initial classes and show them the ropes, give them tips, and provide moral support. (And begin the assimilation :) )

You don't have to be a DM to do that, and you can do it on your own schedule, and with people you like and want to work with.
