Can someone in here tell me the shots, vaccinations, I will need before I travel to Roatan.

Greg

Yeah - what he said. No shots are required but most adults are behind on their routine immunizations and should be updated. Also Hep B if you might be at risk for blood borne illness and Hep A no matter what (I think everyone should have that). I also take, as recommended, chloroquine to prevent malaria. Happy trails!

Preventative meds for malaria are recommended. I did not know that on my first trip and therefore didn't take the meds but luckily had no problems. I did know after that and therefore did take the meds for the second trip. Maybe only a small chance of contracting malaria in Roatan but it is a serious illness and not to be messed with. IMHO, take the meds.

And IMHO, consider your options carefully.

I took mefloquine/larium for only four months, but it wreaked havoc on my central nervous sytem for several years. Nightmares, jitters, the works. Ugh! (Didn't get malaria, though. ;) ) If you haven't already, be sure to study up on anti-malarials before deciding to take them...

Snowfire - Where did you travel that they prescribed mefloquine? Scary stuff! The prophylaxis of choice for Honduras is chloroquine, which has an extremely low rate of side effects; no one in my family has detected any in all our trips, though we do take it after eating just in case.

I was in Roatan last year and I didn't take any shots. If you stay in an AI resort and do not plan to drink tap water or eat in restaurants outside the resort and such you should have nothing to worry.
