Is there any shore diving in coz. Will be staying at eh the Park Royal.

Do a search on this forum; there's tons of info in multiple threads.

Cheers,

When I stayed at the Park Royal, we dove with Scuba Shack. It's a small op, but I like the small 6 pack boats. You can get to the shop by going under the walkway, across the beach & coming up along Aquaworld. Head for the street & turn left. Just past Ernesto's Fajita Factory (yummy) is the dive shop. Very short walk, easier than my description. You can store all your gear with them & they give you free shore diving off of their pier, when you buy a dive package. Was able to find the plane wreck, without too much trouble.

Tell me about Park Royal, I've heard mixed reviews, when were you there?

I was there August 2001. So things may have gotten better/worse.
Rooms are average hotel rooms, clean & plenty of towels. Get a high floor for a great view.
The food was average to below average. Breakfast very good. Lunch was pretty good. Dinner was pretty bad. I suggest going downtown for dinner. Lots of great restaurants.
The pool was fairly large. Circular with a restaurant in the middle of the pool. You go over a little bridge to get to it. Also a swim up bar with great drinks. There is also a kiddie area w/ playground & small pool.
They have some entertainment at night. Some was actually painful to watch. The native dance show in the banquet room was good. I think they might have some organized pool activities, also.
The property is older, so the plants & trees are very big & lush. Like walking through a jungle. I loved walking around the grounds, even though it was very small.
The beach area is a small secluded cove. There are a few hamocks, lounge chairs, restaurant & bar. You follow a path that goes under the main road to get to the beach. That was my favorite part of the hotel. It's very romantic at night.
Diving: I don't know if they have their own dive op. We used Scuba Shack & liked them very much. Aquaworld is also close.
I did the timeshare with them. I would strongly suggest you avoid them. They have blue shirts on that say Royal & I thought they were hotel employees. They offered us a free breakfast (big deal, we were AI) and a free rental car f/ 1 day. It wasn't worth the hassel.

We originally stayed there because I got a good rate. The only reason I haven't stayed there again is we like to try new places. So, yes I would go back-but only if it's cheap. I'd give it a solid score of 5 with 10 being the best.

Another shore dive not mentioned is from Chankanaab National Park. It's an easy but very enjoyable dive. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

When did you dive there. I was there maybe 8 yrs ago and just snorkeled. I hear you need to hire a guide ($20) in order rent tanks and lead.

'Tis true. The story is that some gringo went out unescorted, did something stupid, and had to be rescued. It may have happened more than once. Now everybody has to hire a guide.
