I am thinking about selling my Aluminum 100 Scuba tank on E-Bay. I was wondering how I'd package the tank for shipping. I'm assuming that I'd have empty the tank and remove the valve. Any tips would be helpful.

I'm not quite ready to sell the tank right now, but I plan on selling it toward the end of June. I'm switching to an Aluminum 80. The 100 just feels too bulky, and I don't need the extra air when I dive locally.

See if you can get an LDS to give you one of the plastic plugs they come with when new. Take out the valve and put the plug in, if you can't get one then tape a piece of a (cleaned) plastic milk jug over the hole. Bubble wrap it, taking care to wrap the ends a couple of thicknesses. Fold over 6-8 layers of cardboard to absorb shock on the ends (bet on it being dropped on either end a few times.) Box it up and cross your fingers!

I just bought a set online. They left the valves in the tanks and emptied the tanks. The tanks were shipped individually in long retangular boxes, that were about the size of the tank and valve. Around the valve was a large cardboard tube to protect the valve, think of a roll of papertowel's center with an eight inch diameter about 7 inches tall, that was 1 inch thick. They shipped via fedex ground shipping. Hope this helps.

I've sold 6 of mine so far on eBay all the way from several AL 80's to a steel 104 and the best thing I can recomend is to use a good packaging/shipping center. Too much hassle and cost to do it yourself. Use a UPS Store/Pac-N-Send or whatever. The packer needs to be aware of the special needs of shipping a Scuba tank. Very important! Important on the thick cardboard tube collar skistowe mentioned! Protect the valve!
UPS and DHL are the least expensive and according to UPS's rules you may leave some (20 psi) pressure in the tank. No more. It's not considered HazMat.They ship by weight so you can figure around $25 to $35 for an AL 80 UPS ground with $150 of insurance. My 104 went from St.Pete Fla to Ft.Walton Bch Fla via UPS ground including packing and insurance for $33
If you get any crap from the packing place call the shipper direct and ask about their rules for sending a scuba tank.

E-mail me your address and I will ship you a tank box. We ship tanks all over the world. It's pretty simple. Empty the tank to 0 psi. Leave Valve open. Put tank in box, put some stufffing in it to keep it from moving around. Seal box, Ship .......... an aluminum 100 is an 8 inch tank. It weighs in at a shipping weight of 40lbs. Should cost about 35bucks to ship to most of the lower 48.

Best to sell it locally and let the guy pick it up.

But if you want a box email me

thanks

Hello
I was wondering If you could send me a scuba tank box and I can Pay for it via Pay Pal. I was going to Drive to Florida next week but after my nephew bailed on me I dont want to drive the 24+ hrs by myself so I am thinking about flying. I own all my own scuba equipment and instead of renting a tank I figured I would ship mine there before leaving MI only to realize how difficult finding a box to ship the tank in actually is. I have been looking online for hours for a way to buy 1 tank box lol and came across this message. Would you be willing to ship me a box??? Thank You

100 cu-ft tanks are worth more than an 80 and are more desirable (for some people). I would look hard to find someone local to come to your house and trade with you.. probably simpler and cheaper and no shipping costs...

You may want to compare the cost of shipping there and back compared to just renting a tank, that said, You could just put several wraps of bubble wrap and packaging tape and then just roll the tank up in a cardboard. No need to pay for a special size box. As long as it's protected from being tossed around and covered in cardboard it will be fine. It doesn't have to look pretty. I think you'll find it's likely not worth the hassle to ship a tank to a destination where there's a thousands of tanks ready for service.

When I ship a tank if asked at the shipping center what the contents of the box are I simply say that it contains sporting goods. It avoids any issues with dangerous goods or hazmat. Even though the tank is empty an overzealous or I'll informed counter person can screw up the process.

I remove the valve and wrap it with a few layers of bubble wrap. The opening gets taped over or the plastic plug is used. The tank gets a layer or two and all dead space in the box is filled. If I don't have a box that fits the tank I will make one by cutting down a box or joining two boxes. Heavy packing tape is always used.
