I bought a Sherwood Brut reg (older style.. 3 LP 1 HP, circular instead of oval 2nd stage cover) that I bought off my dive club. Whole thing was $100.. reg, octo, console.
I promptly took it home and gave the 2nd stages a thorough cleaning, replaced an o-ring or two. It breathes quite well.. plenty of air, I don't really notice breathing at all. It gets quite hard to suck down air when looking upward, though. Lowest I've been is 93 feet, I didn't really notice it breathe any differently.
I have tried a magnum, it felt about the same as the Brut. I also tried my instructor's Odin around 80 feet.. it was a bit easier to breathe, but felt to me like air was being rammed down my throat. Strange feeling.
I just bought a drysuit, so I'll probably be upgrading the reg to something with enough LP ports. Chances are that the new reg will be an Apeks.
The Brut costs me $25 + parts to service.
