Sherwoods are great regs for rental, they are fairly reliable, have the dry bleed to keep pool water out and are simple to work on. The Maximus is my least preferred Sherwwod because of the unique hose routing and less than optimum method of adjusting the 2nd stage cracking effort.
The 1st stages are "sorta" balanced....there are 5 cupped washers (and a moving orifice) that are squashed flat at high tank pressures and as tank pressure gets less they retake their cupped shape and push the orifice away from the piston seat which keeps the IP steady as tank pressure falls.
For half the price, better reliability (ok, equal reliability) and significantly better performance, you can get an Apeks xtx20/US4, Zeagle Envoy, or AL Titan LX.

Scubapro piston regulators are the best performing 1st stages in the world but they shouldn't be used in the pool on a regular basis. Chlorine hardens and cracks the O rings and shortens service life. Instructors are better off using diaphragm 1st stages.

Not balanced, though.

I concur Beanojones, its not balanced in the true sense of the word, but to be fair to Sherwood as Fishpie says "its sorta balanced.":D

In my case it was a prime example of the brain and the fingers not following each other.;) - I should have clarified myself.
