October 9, 2024 – Orange County Sheriff's Department officials report that the Sheriff’s Department is deeply saddened to announce the loss of one of our deputies, Derek Tec. Deputy Tec, 24, was off-duty scuba diving with friends near Moro Beach at Crystal Cove State Park on October 6 when he tragically passed away.

Deputy Tec joined the Sheriff’s Department in March 2023 and was assigned to the Central Jails Division. Prior to joining the Sheriff’s Department, he honorably served in the Marine Corps as a Mortarman, earning the rank of Corporal. He was known for his unwavering work ethic, professionalism and commitment to the department. More importantly, he is remembered as a dedicated son, partner and friend. He is survived by his father, mother, two brothers and a younger sister.

We continue to keep Deputy Tec’s family in our prayers and will look to support them during this difficult time. We also remain focused on our Department family who are navigating this heartbreaking loss.

24 seems young to be having a heart attack, wonder what the cause was...
Where does it say he had a heart attack? The only info in the article is that he passed away while diving. Nowhere does it say he had a heart attack.

I also cannot see any reference to a heart attack.
@Kalibr was not saying or insinuating there was a heart attack -- in fact, exactly the opposite. Note their musing after the comma: "wonder what the cause was..."

I don’t understand why there is a reference to his job, it isn’t relevant.

Because they lost one of their own and stated such. No different than someone reporting the loss of their brother, IMO. The vast majority of the LEO community look upon each other as a family.
