I'm looking for a computer for my wife. I've read a lot of posts regarding both computers in the past but a lot of the information is outdated and most hate is based on information that is no longer valid so I wanted to bring new info and get some more up to date discussions. With that said, I decided I would buy a used Suunto Eon Core for myself a while back because I couldn't pass up the deal with AI. Both of us are recreational divers. Maybe one day we'll take on more tech style diving but that will require a lot more money making the computer upgrade less of an overall concern. My wife is a petite woman so getting the thicker Perdix or Petrel seems like it would be obnoxious to her especially if we never progress into tech diving.

From what I've read in the past, especially on this forum, most people hate the Suunto computers due to the RGBM algorithm. I understand this concern especially for tech diving but it's become a moot point as the Eon Core can be switched to the Buhlmann algorithm with recent updates. I currently run Buhlmann on my Eon Core and haven't encountered any of the issues that people hate about the Suunto RGBM.

With that said, I see some pros and cons to getting my wife either computer. On one hand, I know the Eon Core so I can help her with it. On the other hand, it could be nice to get a little more hands on with the Peregrine TX. She would inevitably want Bluetooth log capability to her phone which both appear to have and both can be synced to subsurface. Both are fairly comparable in price when purchased new but more importantly, the Eon Core is regularly available used for about half the price of a Peregrine TX. Peregrine's are rarely available used. I'm sure people could argue that used availability says something but the Eon Core has been around for a lot longer and is still being sold which also says something.

Some questions on the Peregrine... Does it have to be configured on the device or is there a computer software to make it easier? Do you find that you can view all of the blocks you want to see on the same screen or do you have to use different modes/screens to see what you want? For instance, I can see time, depth, compass, and tank pressure on one screen. The view and location of those items maybe not be exactly the format or location I'd idealy like but the information is there. I also have to setup those views prior to diving which is fine but some would probably argue that this system isn't user friendly since it can't be changed on a dive trip if you want something else. I kind of agree...

Any other thoughts or concerns that I should consider?

You don't need any extra software to configure Shearwaters, it's all done on the computer and can be changed easily whenever you like. I hardly ever need to switch screens, although that's obviously personal preference. You do have the ability to edit to some degree what's shown. Much of the "hate" you see directed toward Suunto here isn't so much because of the algorithms as because whatever they are is proprietary and undocumented, so there's no way of knowing what they will actually do.

Good luck getting SUUNTO service if/when you need it.

I would trend toward shearwater but if you want sun to the Ocean looks good too but I haven’t any experience with it.

My main complaint with the Peregrine was the NDL taking up 1/3 of the screen

It’s very easy to set up and scroll to get to any info you don’t put on the main screen and you can get a ton of info right there but I found it cramped for my use and find the Tern fit my need better

I own an Eon core and have used a Peregrine.

Both have great, easy to read displays. Both have large buttons easy to use with gloves underwater.

Eon display layout is more customizable. And I find it more “tasteful” the Peregrine looks more “Industrial” - your opinion may vary.

Peregrine can show more Deco info: Time to Surface, Surf GF, Tissue loading graph etc.

The Eon 3 button interface is really well designed and easy to use. I prefer it to the 2 button Peregrine.

The Peregrine has extremely clear Safety Stop info and displays “Stop Complete” when it is done. The Eon only shows safety stop info during the stop.

The Eon adds time in 30 second intervals when you do a few metres of quick ascent during the dive. The Peregrine ups the stop from 3 to 5 minutes if you get close to NDL.

The ascent rate indicator graph is larger and more obvious on the Eon

Both are great choices. The Peregrine wasn’t available when I purchased my Eon. Not sure which I would have got if it was available.

If safety/deco stop missed, Shearwater computers will not lock up or go into gauge only mode.

Customer service and support… there is none better than Shearwater. There is a thread somewhere on SB where SW users share their screen set up preferences. That should give you an idea of options.

I had to think about the first sentence for a sec!

The Eon does not lock up for a missed safety stop. When set to Buhlmann the Eon will not lock up at all.

It does lock up if you miss over 4 minutes of a deco stop in RGBM mode. I never plan to do that. If an emergency forces me to, I’ll take a day or more off.

Although the algorithm will calculate it, I do not believe any studies have been done on repetitive dives after missing deco. And frankly I wouldn’t want a buddy who thought allowing skipping deco was a major purchasing criteria
