Sharky ponders sharks...

I no longer lead dive groups ( I lasted until I was the oldest active DM in Coz) but on the occasion that I did have a diver afraid of sharks, and we actually saw a real one (not a nurse shark) while diving, the reaction of the worried one was invariably, "wow, that was the neatest thing I ever saw"...I mean every time!

To put it in perspective: I have never in 20 years even heard of a LIVE diver being molested by sharks. As mentioned above, they do not see us as food, and never in those 20 years have I seen a truly dangerous shark (actually any shark) show interest in divers.

Now, if you die in the ocean and your body stays in overnight, it will be chewed on by sharks. But the same is true if you died in a Cozumel vacant lot and by morning the dogs would be chewing on you. Dead meat is just meat!

When I read this, the Snicker's commercial with the two sharks doing a taste comparison popped into my head....I love that one...makes me laugh evertime I see it!

Dear Robbcayman,

I can assure you that there ARE tiger sharks and bull sharks in the area. They are just very afraid of divers and its only the fishermen that sometimes catch them.

I hope the sharks are still hanging around next week. I arrive on Monday and dive until Saturday, and I would love to see a few reef sharks.

Yea, you sort of nailed it. We all were a little thrilled by the brief experience. You going to weigh in on the type? I have had a few DMs take a look and the votes were leaning towards a bull? He sure didn't hang around. He got outta there.

Studying your pic against various sharks, I would guess small bull of a large gray. They both have the same fin placement and shape. Bulls are known in the area & grays down around Belize, so who knows.

Thanks. The gray has that fat middle too? Have you run up against THE decision? Do you leave Humann books in Coz or keep them north to use there? Mine aren't here OF COURSE....

Books,books....we don't need no stinking books! This is the computer age, IPad, IPhones,Kindles.

We have a few down there, but usually our bags have been filled with other stuff we needed there.

What's a gray shark, Mike? Never heard of it. I still maintain Bull due to overall shape, short head, large first dorsal, and second dorsal visibly much larger than I think a Reef would show at this distance. (Reefs have small 2nd dorsals, tips quite dark.) Can't tell about the plane of the beginning of the first dorsal with respect to the pectoral but the Reef's plane is will behind the pectoral and this one doesn't seem to be that far back. My dos centavos.
