Just saw this disturbing thread (with pictures) posted by Drew on Wetpixel ...
Shark finning in Sipadan/Mabul area - Wetpixel :: Underwater Photography Forums

I can't beleive that this is happening but the pictures speak for themselves. I agree with him that we as divers should write to the resorts and all relevant authorities to to campaign against shark finning (fishing) in the protected area where the money is colected from. I say boycott Sipadan for now.

Thanks for posting the thread to wetpixel re: the shark finning. Very disturbing photos. I wrote a letter to each of the Malaysian agencies listed and emailed them. Unfortunately they were all returned as undeliverable. I am not signed in to wetpixel maybe you are and could let the poster know of the problem. I would be glad to follow up in the future.

Hi kneptoon,
Thanks for your efforts. I've emailed them too but only received delivery failure from kapalai@tm.net.my. I then emailed rooney@sipadan-kapalai.com for Sipadan Kapalai Resort & it went thru. Not sure why ALL your emails returned as undelivered. You might want to contact your service provider.

Dear Mr. Jovin Lim,

Thank you very much for highlighting and bringing up this issue to me. Since
yesterday, I've received many e-mails on the same issues from concerned
individuals throughout the globe. For your information, the enforcement of
the existing act/regulations on fisheries is under the purview of the Sabah
Fisheries Department. Therefore, all e-mails received on the same issue has
already been forwarded to that department for their information, attention
and further action.

Thanks once again.

Argh!

This is so irritating, short-sighted, and counter-productive. Is it true that the shark has been so maligned culturally that we just don’t care enough about them that we don't want to save them? I can almost understand people not familiar with the ocean and its animals to harbor these fallacies and thus turn a blind eye. But for a people of the sea who depend on it for a living to be this callous is a whole other matter.

Sad, just plain sad.

I have also sent a response to the e-mail addresses posted.

Thanks for shedding light on this issue.

If Sipadan was boycotted, and there were not any divers there, would there be any reason for the government to doing any conservation whatsoever?? The government is thinking about money and nothing else, IMO...
