Kinda like a pack of big dogs is more dangerous to one man than a single dog is to a couple guys. It really isn't about statistics. If you have experience in diving around aggresive sharks, this would probably seem obvious.

It does to me.

well...the bar graph says something like they were in the water for under an hour when they were attacked....and duh...then the comment section says "because the tank only holds so much air"

stuff like that I found very..cute.

and the one with depth....snorkelers were hit more in 3 ft of water than scuba divers.:11doh: profound, isn't that?

The information comes from the international shark attack file: http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/sharks/ISAF/ISAF.htm

Thanx for the info , went to the site , but the problem that does bother me is that they do not diferrenciate spero's from Scuba divers. Just lloking at the africa stats there has been alot less attacks on scuba divera htan speaor's. another thing they do not define what is an attack, sumtimes a bump has been reported as an attack.

we live and dive in false bay m and in 20 yrs of diving have seen many sharks but never had any problems with them ,including whites. we have a very active rsearch group here especially on GW.

take alook at www.sharklife.co.za

The problem you have with these statisics is the factors may be correlated with each other. For example if spearfishermen are more likely to dive alone then it could be the spearfishing that caused the attacks not the diving alone. We are not part of the natural food chain for sharks. I have read somewhere that the maneaters are generally sharks that are to old or to sick to find their regular food. Most animals, with good reason, have a natural fear of men. It is when people feed them that they lose this fear and cause problems.

I agree with you. The statistics are not perfect but they represent the largest collection of data on the subject to date. They are interesting to me in a few different ways.

You are right in saying humans are not normal shark meat. It is thought that some mistake us for their natural prey or have learned to associate man with meat. In any case it is my belief that sharks are primarily oppurtunistic feeders. I aim to keep their oppurtunities on me to a minimum!

Singapore have ppl that has been attacked by sharks?? None of this was ever in the news, and i think most sharks are too afraid to enter into singapore waters( very bad sedimentations and heavy shipping traffic.) I have only heard of a few sharks around here. Most are in aquariums on the island itself. I wonder if those that were attacked happened in Singapore waters or are Singaporean divers in other nations water that had been attack.

"Shark attacks usually occur because a shark has mistaken a human for prey."

Mistaken? What exactly, makes a human NOT prey to a shark? Silly sharks and their stupid mistakes...
