Shark attacks and buddy diving

What if we said that we dont know about the non-recorded. What if the ratio recorded/non recorded is 1:100? But we just dont know about the 100...?

I dont know, I am just putting that on the table.

That's the point; we don't know except by direct, empirical observation. If it was one to one hundred, we would remember it and talk about it, especially on a forum like this. So...

Someone refresh my memory, please. When was the last observed shark attack (bite, fatal/nonfatal) on a diver while the diver was underwater? In this case, a surfaced diver is a swimmer and not applicable. So we do not clog up this post, PM me & I will list it. I'd really like to know.

It is OK, Rawls has a point, I am not angry at him. Times change and we learn. People used to fish and then catch them and eat them and now the big thing--no kidding--is to catch them and KISS them and then toss them back. I can live with that. Don't know if I would kiss a shark though! I was diving--alone--as usual two weekends after viewing the first Jaws movie. I have to tell you that the opening scene where the girl was eaten is forever burned into my mind. Do,dooomp, do--doooomp, I was so skeeered I got out of the water, funny how things like that can create an irrational phobia--wait--a phobia by definition is irrational.

Shark attacks on divers are so rare it would be hard to collect a sufficient sample to produce valid results that solo divers are more likely to be attacked than buddy divers because the sample is SO VERY SMALL. It makes sense intutively, but, who can really prove it, the numbers are so small, does it matter (unless your the 0.0001% being attacked). N

I once had a buddy taking photos of a shark and in an effort to get away, swam in to me. We both survived.

the sharks are there about 70 % of the time, you know....

Somebody saw a Tiger there the other day...I saw it on IDH trip report.

when a menacing shark is in the area and you feel threatened..... draw knife, cut buddy and swim away slowly but deliberately. Instant buddies tend to be a good source for chumming...

Shark attacks will increase as more people use the ocean. It is important to look at trends to understand the issue. For my part I will continue to dive with a buddy.
