Haha! I can picture it now!

Erika at 30 FSW snapping pictures as usual... she sees a large object in the distance swimming around her. She sticks out her hand and starts humming, "Here kitty kitty kitty..." :rofl3:

It was funnier in my head.... trust me. :14:

They are down off Guadalupe to the south during the fall. GWS are not strictly a northern species, although they tend to be found in northern waters because that's where those fat, juicy seals and sea lions tend to live.

How to be careful? Don't gain so much weight that you look like their natural prey? I'm borderline on that right now so it is time to diet!

:rofl3:

My heart goes out to the family and friends of the swimmer.

This is very rare.
Someone want to do a little searching and find out
how many people have gone in the water, swimming, diving, surfing, since the last attack, along the whole coast? I think we will be in a car wreck, on the way to the beach, before being attacked. I bet we have a bigger chance of being struck by lightening, on the way to the beach.

Once again, my hatred of surface swims has been justified. I swear, every time I do a beach dive I feel I'm being stalked by a large, toothy, hungry fish. :11:

I feel for this man's friends and family. What a terrible tragedy. And I must say, his friends were awesome for responding as quickly as they did. I can only imagine how terrifying that must have been to witness, only to have to get right in the middle of it to try and save a friend. Sucks that it didn't turn out good.

Be safe out there!

I think I may start diving with a submersible machine gun - I know, I know, they don't exist.... yet! :rofl3:

Yeah this does make me rethink my habit of maximizing "fun" dive time by usually doing surface swims both ways. I know some peeps like to say only worry in low light conditions but honestly when you got crappy 1 Erika viz it's not like just because it's bright and sunny out all is well.

I still agree that the chances are very remote of anything bad happening but the truth is that low odds suddenly become much greater with repetition. It's not like there's suddenly some new danger in the waters, merely one that's always been there being brought back into the limelight. However maybe it's a good and timely reminder that we are in fact in an alien environment and remember that being prudently cautious is well worth it, and not cowardly or fear mongering.

But again, that's why I like to dive with Erika, she looks more like a yummy little sharkey snack than me :)
