Whether the guy's theory is valid or not, is irrelevant to me. Spreading his arms and opening his hands to mimmick crab claws, clearly caused the sharks to veer away, repeatedly. What was really interesting about this exchange was that another shark showed up and the "crab method" would work against it as well, but then the sharks seemed to start timing their approaches while working from opposite sides of the diver, causing the diver to continually turn around to fend off the shark approaching from the rear. When a third great white showed up, the diver dashed back into his cage.
This behavior begs the question, are great whites capable of working together in a concerted effort, timing their movements to kill their prey?
Oh, and thanks for teaching me a new word. I'd never ran across the term "benthic" before.
