I knew someone was going to say flawed reasoning or something to that effect. However, If you are attacked by a White Shark your chance of survival is probably not going to be as good, versus being attacked by a bull or tiger. Knowing my luck I would be down looking at the beautiful barrier reef the White Shark hovers above me and I would look like a seal. That's why all those abalone divers use those cage systems. I know the chances of being attacked by a GW is slim but it's just one I don't want to take. Even though it's a slim chance tell that to this guys family. Just because some maniac decides to skin dive with White sharks doesn't make it a good idea. That's the same analogy if everyone engages in dangerous behavior than so can I. They may just have a lucky experience you may not catch the same luck. Bottom line, Great Whites scare me to death and I don't want to run into one. To each his own

IN DEFENSE OF CRAZY PEOPLE
I was looking at the international shark attack file, and if I got it right the survival rate for white shark attacks is actually around 70%. Not that this is any reason to jump in the water with them. On the other hand not that many years ago people thought it was suicide to swim with tiger sharks. Now, I'm doing it this December. Even though this guy sounds crazy now, he could be on the verge of learning something that will change the way people perceive GWs. I beleive if you can do it and live, it wasn't crazy.

Ha ha

Hi all,

I have dived near some non aggressive sharks and I found them fascinating rather than frightening. If attacked by a tiger shark however, I would wish I had something better than just finning away to defend myself with. Hikers in the US have a powerful pepper spray to defend against grizzly bears, while Arctic explorers have always been expected to carry firearms to defend against stalking polar bears. Shouldn’t divers have some defensive tool, even non-lethal ones to defend themselves with if necessary?

Reminds me of a memo I saw circulating around from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It advised hikers who were in black bear and grizzly country to take the following precautions:

Hang food away from tents.
Carry pepper spray to use on a bear if attacked.
Wear small bells on their boots to give bears warning of your approach so you would not startle them or get between a cub and her mother.
Be aware of bear signs, for example black bear droppings are smaller than grizzly bear droppings. Black bear droppings contain seeds and hair while grizzly bear droppings contain bone shards, small bells, and smell like pepper.

While humorous, it had a valid point. Pepper spray doesn't always work. I have seen it used with varying effects. I carry it for self defense, but if that fails I also carry a Glock pistol. When spearfishing I carry a .223 powerhead. I don't know if it would do me any good as I feel a typical shark attack is an ambush attack and could not prepare for it but it gives me some peace of mind. I might add that I have never been menaced by a shark or tried to hurt one. I like seeing them but I am aware I am at the middle of the food chain when I am spearfishing.

Eris Lucan 7 - in case you are serious, and don't know the value of sharks - they, like all apex predators, help to keep populations of other fish in check, they weed out the old, sick and keep the populations healthier and stronger.

Saying that sharks are a useless animal, is the same as saying tigers, bears, killer whales and so on are all useless, merely parasites. This may be your (very misguided) viewpoint, but you owe it to yourself to do some research and get the facts before condemning whole species as parasites. No one is telling you to not defend yourself from an attacking shark, but at the same time, don't go actively stalking them because you personally think they are useless.

James, I also carry a PH when spearing, a 30-06. I don't expect it to do much good in an actual, ambush type attack. Can't stop it if you don't see it coming. What I carry it for are those times when a shark is too pushy, too agressive & the risk escalates despite non-lethal efforts to defuse the situation. So far I haven't had the need to use it, but I do know people who have.
