Well, considering that I don't worry about it now, I see no reason to stop spearing.

I don't "worry" about it. I am prepared for the possibility. Same attitude I have about carrying a sidearm.

I saw some footage of a diver who would venture out of his cage to dive with GW's. The interesting thing about it was everytime a GW would appoach him, he would extend his arms and hold his hands open like a threatened crab would. The shark would veer away. He narrated that he thought that maybe the sharks veering off behavior was a learned response, possibly from experiences with crabs when it was a fingerling.
Anyway, something to try if you see one of them bad-boys coming at ya. Failing that, I'd probably just squirt like a squid.

That dude needs to seriously brush up on his biology...great whites are born almost 3 feet long and sure as hell don't eat crabs.

If you were coming up to a dog on the street that you wanted to pet - and that dog reared up or growled - what would you do? You'd back away or be a bit more cautious. Doesn't matter that you're much bigger than the dog. You're just instinctively avoiding injury.

Al Giddings said it best: In nature, the advantage that predators have against their prey is a very slim one.

It appears - from a bit of research I did apres-post - that adult whites have been known to ingest benthic crabs on a very minimal level.

Oops. I was wrong.

I still say the filmmaker's theory is laughable at best.

Greetings from America. Where ignorance is not bliss.

It's not bliss.. it's called politicans. :11:

Whether the guy's theory is valid or not, is irrelevant to me. Spreading his arms and opening his hands to mimmick crab claws, clearly caused the sharks to veer away, repeatedly. What was really interesting about this exchange was that another shark showed up and the "crab method" would work against it as well, but then the sharks seemed to start timing their approaches while working from opposite sides of the diver, causing the diver to continually turn around to fend off the shark approaching from the rear. When a third great white showed up, the diver dashed back into his cage.
This behavior begs the question, are great whites capable of working together in a concerted effort, timing their movements to kill their prey?
Oh, and thanks for teaching me a new word. I'd never ran across the term "benthic" before.

Zeeman:
Eris Lucan 7 - in case you are serious, and don't know the value of sharks - they, like all apex predators, help to keep populations of other fish in check, they weed out the old, sick and keep the populations healthier and stronger.

Saying that sharks are a useless animal, is the same as saying tigers, bears, killer whales and so on are all useless, merely parasites. This may be your (very mishuided) viewpoint, but you owe it to yourself to do some research and get the facts before condemning whole species as parasites. No one is telling you to not defend yourself from an attacking shark, but at the same time, don't go actively stlaking them because you personally think they are useless.

I think Eris needs to find a different outlet for her opinion...maybe something in her native language, whatever that might be... :sharks:
