I will be in Utila in three weeks and was wondering what the best way to secure my valuables while away from them. If I go out partying I would like to be able to rest assured that I am not going to get robbed blind. Does anyone have any suggestions?

oops, this thread should be under the Bay Islands. Please move.

It largely depends upon what you are talking about.

Your Laptop... that shoebox full of $100's.... your passport.... what?

Nikon Digital Camera and Computer mainly

Where (generally, not specifically) are you staying? Hotel, rental house, group hostel type arrangement?

There is no foolproof way to secure your valuables in a place like Utila. There is not going to be a safe in the room. Such things are a rarity in popular diving locations.

That said, you might try staying at Ruby's. The rooms are behind the owner's house and they are around most of the time. When I stayed there they treated me exceptionally well and helped out with an emergency situation that came up at home.

If you can't afford to loose it, don't bring it with you.

As for the internet and your computer, that whole island has less bandwidth than the average US residential cable connection. The internet cafe's are cheap. Consider using a new email password for the trip and change it every couple of days. Do any banking before you leave.

Nice. Appreciate the response.

How about calling home? I hear internet cafe's have ways to place internet phone calls. What would you recommend that I do to get in touch with my wife back in the states?

I think leadweight has it pretty much deadon. Take the usual precautions of leaving things out of sight. Don't haul your mega camera setup around in the open if you don't have to (leave it in the pelican case until you get to the boat if you can), no flashy jewelry, etc. I've found that what theft there is is usually a crime of opportunity and that by and large Utilians are a great and fun group.

I am assuming Internet Phone calls are the way to go?

Also, do I need any electrical adapter to charge my digital camera battery?
