Another little tip with spools....when rewinding the line as you approach the end of the winding 'build' up a mound of line in the center of the spool leaving the spool holes much easier to clip into, nothing real radical, but will will make for a much easier clip off of the double-ender.

Are you diving dry? Put the spool(s) in your pocket. I try not to carry spools in the open unless it's for a very short trip. I've never had one come apart in the water on me though. I prefer delrin spools with a bunch of holes so I can add the right amount of tension. Halcyon makes them, as do Salvo and a couple of others. Dive Rite's are plastic and I don't use those, and DSS has metal ones which I don't care for, and their Delrin ones only have a couple of holes, so I don't use those either.

If the line is properly tensioned it really shouldn't matter too much if the latch opens. I have to work a bit to get the double ender out of the hole when I am ready to use the spool. Was this a brand new spool or one that you had used underwater before?

This one wasn't new, I've had it in the water before. I am diving dry, I have been experimenting with different spots to carry them. I've used the hip ring, butt ring and thigh pocket from time to time, and think I'll start tossing it in my pocket, especially on "serious" dives for now.

Never have had a spool or reel come loose....pockets are fine but I prefer them clipped off on a d-ring....in a dry suit I will carry them both ways.

Would you mind sharing why you have this preference? I have tried both ways but prefer the pocket. I am always curious why people choose different options.

I have found it much easier for me to simply reach and un clip the spool from a hip d-ring.....it is a normal position for me to place my reel so it's just natural for me to reach their for the spool also. In dry suit diving with bellows I will normally carry a small spool in a pocket but it is a secondary position. Pockets normally contain specf. items and that means multiple chooses once your in the pocket and more chance of item loose/dropped or item entanglement within a pocket.
