Now there's solid evidence that some common seaweed kills coral chemically in a very short time, so overfishing the herbivores keeping the seaweed in check can lead to coral decline.

The good news is this only happens when the seaweed is in direct contact with the coral. The bad news is this coral-destroying ability might be present in 40% - 70% of common seaweed species.
