Search to Continue for Missing Mono County Ice Diver

March 12, 2007 10:12 AM EDT

Authorities say special dive teams will head back to the scene of Sunday's ice diving accident in Mono County.

Several law enforcement agencies began their search for a missing diver Sunday afternoon at Gull Lake.

The Mono County Sheriff's Department says three people were ice diving, but one did not re-surface. Numerous holes were cut into the ice to try to locate the missing diver, but search and rescue crews were unsuccessful.

They say they will try again Monday morning with the help of the San Bernadino County Sheriff's Department dive team.

He was located today between 3 and 4 pm PDT.
Did he become separated from his tether? My condolences to his family and friends.

Very unfortunate.....my condolences to family and friends

diver 85:
thanks for the link.........hopefully a couple things will be learned from this terrible accident......
I hope so too, but I wouldn't count on it. A similar thing happened in February with two ice divers without tethers, where one made it out but the other didnt, but the buddy has an account here and is a GUE cave diver and didn't want it publicized and got the moderators to remove the thread:

I read the buddy's report on here before it got removed.....I was hoping it would have been left here, from what I remember it was an informative read......

what does it mean by this?

The buddy left him after finding out unconsciousness?

=====================================================

He and a regular diving partner were about 27 metres under ice-covered water after following a guide line out to the King's Horn shipwreck, which lies about 240 metres from shore, according to Ontario Provincial Police.

They were on their way back when Mr. Smeaton's main and back-up regulators -- which control air flow -- failed, police said.

Mr. Smeaton's diving partner tried to help him with air from his tank, but Mr. Smeaton lost consciousness and was unable to breathe. The partner tried, but could not pull Mr. Smeaton to shore, and his body was recovered by an OPP search and rescue team yesterday.
