SDI "Advanced Adventure" vs "Advanced Diver Development"

I understand what the difference is in qualifications between these two certifications (Advanced Adventure = 5 dives, each in a different specialty w/ deep and navigation required; Advanced Diver Development = 4 specialty certifications + 25 logged dives).

But which one is AOW? To me it seems the Advanced Diver Development would be considered "advanced" since it at least has a minimal experience requirement, but from what people tell me the Advanced Adventure (which is just a specialty) is what counts as AOW. Further complicated by the fact that boat charters (in S. Florida anyway) seem to want "advanced" to let you go on deep dives but the Adventure specialty only requires 1 deep dive no more than 100 fsw and you could get the Advanced Diver Development without a single deep dive. Seems to me they should require the deep specialty instead.

Not a big deal really, I was just kinda curious as to what is what. This whole certification thing makes my head spin.

This is the PADI AOW clone course. Some operators feel that if divers have this, they're immune from liability if something goes wrong at 100'.

SSI makes exactly the same course making me wonder whether you got mixed between SDI and SSI?

It looks like a clone course to me as well, however the OP's summation is right off the SDI website.


My opinion is that the Advanced Adventure is the AOW, but go to the Q&A for SDI on Scubaboard and ask. SDI/TDI/ERDI

Successful completion of 4 specialty certifications + 25 logged dives earns the SDI Advanced Open Water Diver Card (AOW)

SDI Advanced Adventure Diver = PADI AOWD
SDI Advanced Scuba Diver has 4 specialty certs and 25 dives = No PADI equivalent
SDI Advanced Scuba Diver + Rescue Diver + 50 dives is SDI Master Scuba Diver = PADI MSD but with 4 rather than 5 specialty certs

Pretty similar. Vislor's question is a good one. I would want to make sure my SDI Advanced Adventure Diver would be accepted like PADI AOW to get me on boats/dives with the requirement. Some operators may be less familiar with SDI, or other agencies, than they are with PADI

There is no SDI Advanced Open Water card. I just checked their Standards. What you are describing is their Advanced Diver card.
There may be a way to make this even more confusing, but they obviously haven't thought of it yet!

I got the SDI Advance Adventure shortly after getting certified. I have never had it questioned on a dive boat. But it eventually got replaced by other certs.
