There's a little bit of mucking around but not that hard. Take the springs off by undoing the two little bolts then knock out the two pins I've pointed at from the back, the cord is tied to the U brackets. Use the old cord to pull the new cord through the spring, once the old cord is out measure it and make the new one two inches longer. Tie it off and reassembleIs it easy to do that?
The cord is to stop over stretching the spring, I'm not sure bungee would do that.It is possible to carry out a smart upgrade of the spring if you install a rubber cord, bungee instead of paracord
I just cut the string out of mine, it takes a ton of force to stretch mine. I'm not pulling that hard.
