ScubaTexas:
What are the real world differences between the Scubapro G250 and S550?

Can't really comment on the differences, but I can tell you that I love my G250. :sappy: Going on close to 10 yrs and I wouldn't give it up for anything.

The G250HP is adjustable and the S550 is not. The G250 also uses a larger diaphragm, which I prefer, but then the overall size is larger.

Internally, they all have the same guts. The S600 is the same as a G250Hp but in a smaller case and an S550 is essentially an S600 without the adjustment. All breathe very well. I prefer he G250HP as you get some potential benfits from a larger diaphragm and you get the same performance for less money. The only downside to the G250 is the larger case, but I have never personally seen where that is a problem. Some divers though just will not be caught dead with a larger second stage. Go figure.

If it were me I would choose the G250 over the S550 hands down.

The 250HP has the adjustment knob. I've used both and like the G250HP better. The S550 is nice and you really can't tell a difference between the two, but I like the adjustment knob and larger diaphram. I have a G250HP and an S600 and they breath the same. I would get the G250HP.

Has anyone compared them to the X650? I understand it is basically an S600 with a redesigned case...

The X-650 uses the same basic poppet design as the S-wing poppet used in all of SP's other balanced second stages but the poppet is slighty shorter. The balance chamber and adjustment knob are also essentially the same as in the S600. However due to the case design and the positioning of the diaphragm, the lever is much longer.

The case design is similar to the D400 with the diaphragm angled at about 45 degrees. Unlike the D400, the exhaust valve is not mounted coaxially in the diaphragm. But the X650 still offers some potential benefits in terms of case geometry fault and how the reg breathes in different diver orientations.

The X650 sounds great in theory, but I have still not had a chance to dive with one yet.
