The late production D400's were badly detuned to meet CE freeflow requirements and this came on top of a switch to a replaceable plastic orifice that greatl;y reduced the potential performance.
And if your "G250" came with a Mk 25, the odds are it is a G250HP. They are not the same reg and the G250HP is by comparison a piece of mostly plastic crap.
These are both exellent points; I assumed that since the OP did not say "G250HP" his was the much better original G250. If his G250 is a G250HP, I would absolutely recommend keeping the D400, regardless of it's vintage.
I forgot about the late plastic orifice D400s; I've never seen one to I tend to forget they exist. If the OPs D400 is one of these, and the G250 is the original metal-barrel version, I'd keep that one.
I'm also not a particular fan of the MK25's external IP adjustment, although it's not that big an issue IMO. The original shim method is a little more labor intensive at rebuild time, but since these 1st stages can function extremely well with a wide range of IP, it's not that important to set them at a particular value. The shim method does produce VERY stable IP, and presents one less possible leak point.
