I'm with Matt (mjcoussens) and I think we're planning on bringing some potato salad.
Is Shark's Cove the definite spot? I'm trying to think about where a good place to grill out and picnic is there, but all I can picture are the rocks. Any thoughts for Hale'iwa Trench since there is a huge beach park with lots of parking? Just a thought, but regardless we're happy to dive Sharks Cove.

You know, I've never had the opportunity to dive the trench. I always thought it was a boat dive. What's it like?

It's quite nice...walk out about 75-100yds, drop over the edge and down to 90+. Some neat stuff on the bottom, lots of caves, nooks, and crannies. Mohneys1 found a really nice chimney swim through last weekend that took us from 66ft up to the top of the shelf at 11ft. The edge is really nice too as far as reef-life goes. Some nice corals, lots of nudibranchs, turtles, etc. We'll most likely be diving it this saturday am (after stopping by the scuba shop opening sale first of course!) if you'd like to tag along.

I'd really like to join you, but I work Saturday mornings. This does sound intriguing, though - where's the entrance - is this out of Haleiwa Beach Park? And when you say "walk out about 75-100 yds" - do you mean you're wading out from the beach or are you picking your way out over some rocks?

I'm surprised that it's not mentioned in shorediving.com . . . (or is it?) sounds like a nice dive.

It is at the Ali'i Beach Park...just wade out from the beach about 75yds. I believe it is site number 6 on shorediving.com http://shorediving.com/Earth/Hawaii/Oahu/Haleiwa_Ali/pic4.htm

I have seen a manta ray and a Hawaiian Monk Seal at the Trench.

Thanks! I'll have to check it out one day - the time I have available to dive is quite limited (work and other obligations) but if our schedules ever match up, I'd love to dive with you guys sometime. At any rate though, I know I'll see you on Labor Day.

Well I put in a request for our annual meetings on Oahu to be moved to the week before the get-together ... now to see I get my wish

Tim

Crossing everything for ya :xeye: ...

The location is not a must. We still have time to make up our minds where.

Suggestions are:

Sharks Cove
Trench

Anything else?

Will you be joining us too? :D

The walk out is in the water, it's about knee high for most of it. You're walking on coral and stuff (lots of urchins) so it's not something you want to attempt without boots. However with boots, preferably stable bottomed ones, its an easy entry, and pretty flat. No climbing all over the place to get to the water. And like Matt said, once you get to the edge of the wall it pretty much drops down to 90 ft. It's become one of our favorite spots since we always see neat stuff there. We end up there almost every weekend, so let us know if you ever want to go, because most likely we'll be headed out that way anyway.
