I am interested in getting a ScubaBoard event going at Ft.Pickens now that electricity has been run into the campgrounds. I am open to a winter or summer event as it won't conflict with Vortoberfest or Springfest (although summer would obviously be more popular). This event would allow everyone to get together and not only dive the Ft. Pickens Jetties, Pensacola Beach Pier Rubble, (and others) but we could easily get a boat together for a trip out to the Oriskany!!!!! What do you think??????????

We need an offical name, what are your ideas??????

I'm in! I also think a winter event would work great, and although I like the June time frame as well, I think that it may be bug fest! I like several of Alex's event names but if I had to choose I'd go with PickenPalooza!

The winds tend to pick up in the winter time, thus making a boat trip extremely hard. High tides also tend to move to the nightime in the winter months (dunno why). These two factors wouldn't make for much of a winter turn out IMO. I think a summertime event would be better.

I think that an offer to dive the Oriskany would be a big draw for the event. The biggest boat in the area is the Reel Easy with the H2O Below a close second, but we could always use some of the local six packs like Dr. Dive and Blue Water Adventures for overflow. We could even organize an advanced dive for the Oriskany folks and then have a beginner style trip on one of the six packs to some of the other great inshore locations Pensacola has to offer.

I like the name Jetty fest as Mike S suggested because you have close proximity to

Perdido pass
Ft. Pickens
Destin Jetties
Panama City (St Andrews Jetties)

This would also allow us to move the event from Ft. Pickens one year and then St. Andrews Jetties the next or so.

What do you guys/gals think??????

Very good points. We can make the winter Jettyfest a night dive fest. I looked at a 8/7 mill suit today Aqualung. $450.00.

Another nice thing about having an event at Ft. Pickens is that if people do not want to camp out they can get a hotel room on Pensacola Beach that is only 5 to 6 miles (approximately) away.

I actually liked the PickensPalooza name as well. Although if we name it Jetty Fest we could move it to St. Andrews Jetties every once in a while and retain the event name.

JettyFest is nice too. In looking at the tides the weekend of January 23rd looks promising as it is a neap tide time with very low tide swings the whole weekend. Which would also make the Massachusetts a possibility. Those of us with boats could anchor them at shore near the campground and do a trip to the Mass too! Here are the tides:

F 22 Low 1:39 AM -0.1 6:45 AM Rise 10:28 AM 34
22 High 2:37 PM 0.6 5:17 PM

Sa 23 Low 2:26 AM -0.2 6:44 AM Set 12:06 AM 44
23 High 3:11 PM 0.7 5:18 PM Rise 11:03 AM

Su 24 Low 3:26 AM -0.4 6:44 AM Set 1:08 AM 54
24 High 4:02 PM 0.9 5:19 PM Rise 11:45 AM

Do you guys/gals think we should get the mods to sticky this thread or just wait until we get things worked out a bit more first??????
