I'm not sure of all the particulars but I heard this on the 6 o'clock news. A diver perished off one of the beaches in Gloucester. It was on WCVB channel 5 but I don't see anything posted to their site.

Sorry I don't have more to pass on. But thought everyone on NELD might want to know.

According to Fox13 Ten o'clock news, it was at Niles Beach. According to them, he was diving with partners and when he got separated. They found him later (length of time not specified) face-up in six feet of water with no entanglements. They did not identify him but said it was a 47 year old man.

certainly a shame....and of course makes us wonder what the cause was.

Apparently he was working on his dry suit certification when it happened. but, the cause is not yet known. it's terrible, and my prayers go out to his family.

BOSTON -- A Wilmington, Mass., man is dead after a diving accident off the shores of Gloucester and the reason for his death has police baffled.
David Lanardis, 43, was pulled from just 6 feet of water Sunday.
Police said the man was working towards his dry suit certification when he died
Apparently, diving with a group, Lanardis was supposed to go back to shore with a diver who was cold but then Lanardis never made it back to meet the others.
Lanardis had plenty of air remaining in his tank.

That's terrible. Heart goes out to the man's family/friends. We'll have to wait and see how much more information comes to light regarding the cause/s of this tragedy. Never dove at Niles, but all the books and write ups say it's the place to go when all other sites on Cape Ann are washed out.

It is very sad news. The article states that he was diving recreationally, as opposed to a cert dive so as usual when these incidents are first reported, there seems to be conflicting information.
Eager to hear what the outcome of the investigation is.

I'm jsut speculating here, but he probably had a heart attack.

I hate to speculate without more info, but I was thinking the same thing and I'm sure others were, too. Someone else said this way before me, but lots of 'diving accidents' resulting in deaths are just medical issues which just happen to occur during diving. Maybe we willl find out later if this was the case in this incident.
