Scuba Sport Magazine announced today that its editor, Joe Froelich will receive the prestigious SSI Platinum Pro 5000 award at the 2012 DEMA Show in Las Vegas. Since the inception of the award in 1993, only 1664 divers have earned the distinction of becoming a SSI Platinum Pro 5000 card holder.

"I'm thrilled beyond words, but I think I'm going to feel like a rookie at an all-star game", said Froelich, referring to attending the banquet welcoming new inductees in Las Vegas on November 15th.

"This should also help the magazine gain credibility as this serves as an announcement that Scuba Sport Magazine really is a magazine created by recreational scuba divers, for recreational divers", Froelich said.

Froelich's magazine, Scuba Sport Magazine has experienced a meteoric rise in popularity since its debut in December 2011. It has gone from prototype to a print circulation of 15,000 available through a network of over 350 "opted-in" dive centers located mainly throughout the eastern half of the United States. Since 1993, Scuba Schools International (SSI) has been awarding divers who have demonstrated a commitment to recreational diving and a rarely-achieved level of diving experience with the Platinum Pro 5000 award. There are two ways divers become eligible. The first is simple: submit proof of completing over 5000 dives. The second way is to show proof of completing over 2500 dives, be a diving professional for over 10 years, have two current Platinum Pro Honorees provide written recommendations, and show proof of significant contributions to the recreational diving community.

In addition to completing over 2500 dives, Froelich has had articles and/or photos published in USA Today, Sport Diver, Scuba Diving, Skin Diver, Southern Diver, Dive Training, Dive Travel, Florida Scuba News, Scuba News, Scuba Times, Discover Diving, Florida Underwater, Dive Report, Scuba Sport, Carolina Style & Citylink Magazines. He also served as a featured columnist for the Scuba News for four years, where his photo sgraced the cover a record 20 times. He also was a featured columnist for EcoFlorida Magazine. Froelich has also had photos appear on the covers of Skin Diver, Southern Diver & the 2001 Oceanfest official program. Joe also has photos in the books: REEF Creature ID (Paul Humann), Ned Deloach’s Underwater Florida (Ned DeLoach), & Reef Fishes (Patrick Michael). His photos were also used to promote Florida at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan.
