i was in the process of finishing my basic open water diving course. i completed one checkout dive last summer and was counting on finishing up this spring. i went by the shop the other day and the store is empty with a for rent sign on it. i was never notified of it's closing and i can't get a return call. the class was paid in full. it was a naui, btw.

any suggestions on what to do when this happens?
Hope you paid with a credit card, and IMMEDIATELY, without delay, contact the cc company and request a chargeback. You'll need to do this in writing. Do it. Do it now.

See if you can contact the Instructor by contacting the agency he/she teaches for and seek a universal referral from that instructor and give to your new instructor. Good Luck on getting your money back. The shop I used to teach for Atlantic Pro Dive went belly up and they still owe me 841.00 dollars. I don't expect to see this money.

Good Luck

i finally got a text message today telling me they're getting my referral package ready for me. didn't even bother to actually call and speak with me. didn't mention anything about a refund or how the package is to be passed along to me. real class. fortunately i spoke with someone over at another dive shop and they were quite helpful. looks like i may finally get certified this summer!

That seems to be the standard deal with most posters, OP or not. Very few read the entire threads before hopping on.

It's the int:eyebrow:rnet.

My thoughts exactly. I was feeling like emailing each person on that scuba shop's website and ask them what's up. Where's their own personal integrity - regardless of what has happened to their little ripoff LDS.

Primus67 - I do hope that one of these instructors have heard that their name is being spread across the world. And possibly, by no fault of their own (fault is probably with the ripoff ex-owner), they had no access to their students. Here's wishing you well and hoping you get your diving cert soon - scuba diving is a blast!

That's not good----------why did you wait so long for the last checkout dives..I'd say you're xxxx out of luck with them....Sign up for another course, bet you won't wait 8 months between dives this time...

wonder if there was a family tragedy or if they just went belly up . . . might want to find out before you start saying he ripped folks off. . .

Not saying he had a tragedy. . .

Not only family tragedy, but if it was not the LDSs decision to take such a long time in between classes/sessions, then it is very possible that the economy failed him like it has so many others today. This has nothing to do with ripping somebody off. I am pretty confident that most companies that have closed over the last couple of months would much rather still be in business and making a profit. Sometimes businesses just have to close and if someone is not around to collect on something, then they suffer.

Now, if they were receiving the messages from the OP and ignoriong them, then I would say they likely do not deserve the benefit of the doubt. If, because they closed up shop, they were not getting any messages, then they deserve the benefit IMO.

maybe he should be writing his congress person saying that he has a company that is in need of a government bailout. . .
