Where does the G250 fall in terms of the trim - is it a middle of the road reg, high end, low end??

I am trying to find out what would be a comparible regulator to replace a G250.

Thanks!

I would consider it high end. I have a G250 MK20 and still would put it up against anything out there. My D400 is slightly better as far as air delivery but I trust the G250 more in cold water. I have other regulators but as far as performance these are among the best I own.

Newer models: G250HP, S600, S550 with a MK25 or MK17. You can go with Atomic; their regulators are made by the same engineers that designed Scubapro’s back in the day. Apeks ATX 50 (have an octo), 100, 200 (tried a friends) or Aqua-Lung Legend (a buddy let me try) would be in the ballpark. The list goes on and on…

See if you can try some different models out before you make your decision.

In perfomance wise, G250HP is better than S600, specially in cold water. But, if you want to talk about the performance range, you should mention the 1st stage together.

APEKS ATX50, ATX40, TX40 are all same except some cosmetic and size.

It is a fairly high performance reg. 10 years ago it was pretty much the performance standard others had to compete with. Now there are many choices in that class. Why get rid of the g250 and what characteristics are you looking for in it's replacement?

Well - It's actually for my girlfriend for a Christmas gift. She keeps mentioning that she wants to get a new reg, because this one is quite old. But I am not an expert at some of the model #'s.

I know that Atomic and Apeks make good stuff, but didn't know about what models would be comparible. I wouldn't want to buy her a $200 regulator if the G250 was a $500 reg. On the other hand, I didn't want to go to the deep end and spend $500 if her reg was only $200.

It seems that the Apeks, the S600, or even an atomics may be the best way to go for performance / price.

I'd disagree. Both Scubapro and Atomics are high performance, but at a higher price than similarly high performance regs.

In order to replace it with a comparable reg, you need to specify the 1st stage. Another issue is if it's the older G250 with the metal air barrel or the newer G250hp which is all plastic. If it's the older style and in good shape, I'd consider just getting it rebuilt as those regs are very highly thought of and sometimes have a better resale value than the newer ones. (I think!) The metal air barrel helps with cold water performance and also helps with dry mouth.

If it's an old MK10 with the older style G250 2nd stage there are lots of divers who would claim that no matter what you spend, you'll have a hard time finding a reg at any price that performs noticably better. Certainly if you replaced it, she'd have no trouble selling it. Also, I'm wondering if SP is discontinuing the G250 as I don't see it on their UK website anymore, but it's on the US site.

Let's review...your girlfreind has a Scubapro G250, which is one of the most highly regarded regs in history (whether it has a Mk 10, Mk 15, Mk 20 or Mk 25 first stage) and she wants to get a new one because it is "old".

The problem is maybe not that the G250 is old but rather that the girlfreind is high maintenance. What happens in a few years when you are also considered to be a little "old"?

Dump the girlfreind and then buy yourself a new G250.

Failing that, your only other option is to buy her another G250 as if you buy her anything else, she will notice the drop in performance and dump you for being cheap and/or for having poor taste in regs. A Mk 17 G250 would be a good choice or maybe a Mk 17 X650. Both offer superb performance without breaking the bank.

Wow. That is the strong statement. :05:

BTW, as I was told, G250HP is also going to be discontinued soon.
