I am currently enrolled in an AOW class. We have been told that the next class, this Thursday, will be in conjunction with a Boy Scout group doing a SCUBA experience. We, the AOW students, have been asked to contribute our pool time and assist with the SCUBA experience by helping and watching over a couple of the scouts. The instructors will be out of town and the class will be under the direction of a DiveCon (Assistant Instructor.) Any thoughts?

It's got be in violation of the rules of whatever cert. organization you belong to. If anythings goes wrong, the organization's insurance is not going to cover.

This would violate standards of any organization I am familiar with, and void any insurance coverage. You could also be held liable I would imagine.

Can't believe anyone really asked this...

an assistand instructor can only lead precertified divers
they can help explain stuff that has already been taught.

i think that is a pretty general standard for most agencies.

I would inform the scoutmaster that there will not be an instructor there, this is not a good thing for the kids.

i do not believe you will have any liability as long as you identify yourself and a OW diver. and you do not teach or supervice anything.

if you are in the water at the same time big deal., if the scouts are allready certified then there is no problem.

Quick go post this in the thread entitled "What's the most idiotic thing you've have witnessed divers doing?"

In a PADI program it would be a violation for a Divemaster to conduct such a program. as far as I know there is never a time by any standards where an AOW student would ever be allowed to supervise anyone, ever, especialy uncertified divers. In an IANTD program an instructor must always be in the water no matter who else is there.

Everytime I think I have heard everything...

They could let you help carry equipment and stuff like that though.

In addition to what the others said, are you telling us that you would have to give up part of your class time (which you are paying for) to do this????????? Any AOW class course I know needs all the class time for YOUR instruction. It's your class, they should not be taking away from YOUR time. Besides, how were you going to have a AOW class without the instructor?? Am I missing something here???????

There's something hinky with this whole scenario!

You're IN a class yourself so basically you're still only an OW diver. That alone disqualifies you to assist in any class under any circumstances.

The instructors will be out of town? So...who's teaching your class? A DiveCon is not qualified to teach AOW classes. I'm not sure they can conduct a scuba experience on their own either but SSI works a bit differently than PADI does.

I'd turn my back on the whole thing and find an instructor who was interested in his students.

There will be two instructors there. (The instructors aren't leaving town until Friday.) We are still being asked to assist with the scout group. So... Any thoughts?

(Sorry for the bad info.) :(

My only thought would be you're instructor is an idiot. He is assuming a lot of liability if something were to go wrong. On the other hand, it would be a good experience for you to work with new divers. If I were paying for the class and was asked to work on something outside of the class I would be pissed. It sounds like the instructor is looking for some free labor.
